Friday November 17 + Saturday the 18th is the 2023 Show + Sale Winter Market! Get ready for the holidays with the 2023 AUArts Students Association’s Show + Sale Winter Market and snag the finest wares from Alberta’s emerging artists, designers, and craftspeople.   

The Winter Market kicks off with the First Night Fundraiser on Friday, November 17 from 5 - 9 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance on Eventbrite [link in bio] or at the door, with a portion of the proceeds going towards AUArts scholarships. Come and enjoy live music, refreshments, snacks, and more! All while mingling with our student artists and being the first to purchase original artwork!

On Saturday, November 18 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., entry is by donation for our family-friendly hours. Join us for all-ages live art demos throughout the day and complete your holiday shopping list.

Pricing 101 Workshop Know Your Worth! with Kenzie Roth

Know Your Worth! - Pricing 101 Workshop

Led by Show + Sale alumni and interdisciplinary artist Kenzie Roth on October 11 at 1pm in room 395 (third upper floor). The first hour will be lecture based, learning how to price your works. Then please bring pictures or your physical pieces from 2pm to 5pm for an open Q+A and get some feedback on pricing your very own pieces!

Behold the scariest question that every artist asks themselves: "What should I sell my art for?". In this live workshop we're inviting alumni and Show + Sale veteran Kenzie Roth to show us some great tips on how to price all kinds of artwork from paintings to prints to ceramics. This workshop is designed to complement the Show + Sale Pricing 101 online series and is great for any AUArts student who wants to start selling their work for the first time.

This 6 week program is an excellent opportunity to learn the essential skills of selling at an arts market such as:

- Art installation experience

- Marketing and branding

The Show + Sale program runs during October and November and end with the in-person Winter Market November 17th + 18th.

Navigating the Art World with Tara Vahab

Tara Vahab is an artist, educator, entrepreneur and motivator. Tara received her BFA from University of Calgary in 2015 although she has been practicing visual arts professionally since the age of nine. In her role as an engagement coordinator, Tara is a source of empowerment for Alberta professional visual artists. Tara’s vision is to spread awareness and create peace and unity. Through her art, she explores subjects of humanity, empathy and joy using newspapers and bright colours.

In this presentation students will learn what professional artists do, how to develop and maintain your business, and how to price work - as well as dealing with artist fees, copyright, best practices and industry standards, and how CARFAC can help students.

May G N will guide us through CV fundamentals, a live CV writing demo, and work alongside participants to build their own CV, solve problems, and answer questions.

Bring a notebook, laptop, or whatever other tools you may need to take notes and follow along.

May G N is a trans-Albertan artist and educator who lives and works on Treaty 7 territory. Somehow, she’s been allowed to help run TRUCK Contemporary Art. She believes that art is for making things possible when they otherwise wouldn’t be. One day, they hope to create a space where people can make art whenever they want without fear.

Apply to Show + Sale's Virtual Spring Market 2023, running ONLINE from April 22-28, 2023

New year, new opportunities! We're looking for talented current AUArts students to join us for our juried Virtual Spring Market, happening just in time for Mother's Day on our online gallery shop.

If you're looking to get your first taste of selling artwork online, this program is for you! This Winter semester, experience e-commerce as an artist with support from our team on writing artist statements, pricing, and photographing your work. At the end of the program, you can sell your art with confidence during our 7 day online sale. With a highly competitive 25% commission fee and bonus perks like free packaging supplies, 1 on 1 meetings, and first dibs access to subsidized photo doc services, Show + Sale is the perfect place to learn the ropes of selling your art and learning professional skills.

Our jury this semester will be made up of 3 talented, community-focused artists and arts professionals in Calgary. Each applicant will receive written feedback along with a numeral score to help them grow. Keep an eye on SA online channels to find out who our jurors are! As a juried opportunity Show + Sale will accept applicants with a jury score of 21/42 or higher. Applicants with lower scores may be accepted on a case by case basis as space allows. This opportunity is open to students of all years and majors, including part-time students. Students may also apply as an Artist Group to fundraise for galleries, clubs, and more!

Brandjitsu: Grow Your Brand

SA Community Hub event.

This event is FREE but you must register for a ticket. After registration, attendees will receive a copy of the worksheets they will need for the workshop within 72 hours before the event. Make sure you register early and arrive on time!

  • In this 4.5-hour intensive workshop you will get hands-on experience learning the second and third level of BrandJitsu to shape your story and learn how to share it in a way that is meaningful to you and your customers. Building on the first workshop ‘Brand Core’, this session continues the process and connects the DNA of what you do and why you do it directly to who you do it for and why they care. The result is a clear and compelling story that can’t be ignored.

  • Attendees should review the Brandjitsu Part 1: Brand Core curriculum and attend the Brandjitsu Primer on February 11th before attending for maximum benefit. All course materials, including the previous video of the ‘Brand Core’ session, will be made available to all who register.

  • Open to all current AUArts students for FREE, thanks to AUArts SA Show+Sale and community partner RBC.

This semester, Show+Sale is excited to sponsor our first ever "Ask an Artist" workshops from March 7-9, featuring 3 practicing (and successful) AUArts alumni who have gone through the graduation growing pains who will share their stories and give practical advice on your current portfolio/artist statement/career goals. AUArts SA subsidizes photography fees so that students can receive high quality pure white (255 white) product and portrait photography at incredibly affordable prices! By purchasing photo packages as part of Photo Doc Days, you'll be ready for any gallery application, grant, residency, or sale that comes your way and you will be supporting your fellow BDes Photography classmates so they can earn industry standard fees while still in school!

* In order to be eligible for Photo Doc Days, students must first attend/watch our Copyright for Visual Artists virtual workshop available on MS Stream. Open to ALL AUArts students, faculty, and alumni. Join instructor and local creative Michael Dargie on ZOOM from 1pm-2pm for a review of last semester's branding workshop Brandjitsu: Brand Core and to get ready for our upcoming sequel workshop on February 26: Brandjitsu: Grow Your Brand.

Michael will review the basics of branding and why it is important for a creative practice, show some case studies of successful brands by local artists, and give a sneak preview of his next intensive workshop happening later this month.
