Hollis is a lovely person and incredible friend. I miss them a lot. I am grateful of them co-running the button club throughout all this chaos, and also grateful for them just being in my life. They have a warm personality and always make me smile.

Truly awesome pal who I miss doing homework with! You've helped me through a lot over the past 4 years!

Izzy Pilz

You and your art are fantastic, and I'm glad to know you!

Jamie Russett

Jamie, thank you for the dedication and follow through with the Community Hub. You knocked everyone's socks off with your innovation and imagination. In a time when our community was completely separated, you created a space to connect and to be informed. YOU are outstanding and I admire you.

Jamie has so much heart and so much energy for her colleagues. She has really transformed the online learning experience to one that has made room to keep connected with other creatives at AUArts. I am so grateful that I have had the chance to meet her and see how far her practice and advocacy for the student body has grown. The lady is a boss who gets shit done! Mad love <3

Thank you for being so sweet, and for everything you do for your fellow students!

The AUArts community is so lucky to have Jamie and her passion for connecting others! Her efforts have genuinely helped me and so many others feel less alone.

The school's communal atmosphere would feel a lot different without all the work you put into the Community Hub and community events. You are a pleasure to work with, and the care you put. Into everything you do is inspiring.

Janira Moncayo

Janira!! I am so grateful to have gotten to witness the way you’ve impacted our community this year through both your tireless advocacy for international students on SLC and in running the Screen Gallery. Thank you again for the workshop you cohosted in November and for always ensuring the voices of international students are heard, even once you are gone. You are an incredible leader and I am so excited to see what you end up doing after your convocation!

I'm constantly amazed by how much Janira has done to help others this year! From International Student Meetings to the Library Workshop, it's so cool to see her create so much opportunity for others as a Student Rep.

Jen Danvers

Jen!!! I think you know how much your friendship has meant to me through these last few years of our degree.. that being said I am SO grateful for the ways you have chosen to dedicate your time and energy in this last school year to bringing together our community in such inspiring ways. Your time on the SLC and in running the PRZ group has had such a positive impact on all of our abilities to get through this last year and I am so grateful for your dedication and excitement in navigating these experiences!!

Jennah Heshmat

Jennah is always thinking about others, she has such a big heart. I am especially grateful because she created an online server for our classmates to stay connected and help each other with school or just life. We have found such a lovely sense of community and it is all thanks to her. She is also an incredible friend. She is there for me when I need someone and will do anything to make me laugh. I have so much love for her.

For keeping our whole department connected
being an amazing, supportive human being
everything. ❤️❤️❤️

You are so amazing, a sweet person and stunning artist.

Jennah has been a great support for everyone in the character design/illustration department especially this year. She does a lot for everyone and always try to keep everyone connected even if it’s only through online chats and calls. She’s a hardworking, understanding, and wonderful individual, and a very amazing illustrator that everyone should be proud of. :)

She has been running the Discord server for vcd students for the past year. Getting though the pandemic has been hell but having somewhere we can talk to each other as students and help each other had been invaluable. A lot of students have been helped by this and depend on it.

For making AUArts a brighter and queer-er place. For the distinct, warm energy your bring to everything.

I am so grateful you decide to spend your time working with us!

Maya Kacsmar-Mayoh

For being an amazing artist and wonderful person!!

Maya is a bottomlessly caring person. So many times I've felt like giving up and they show up with something to make me feel better and keep going. This past year has been hell, and having someone like Maya in my life has been invaluable. Maya's compassion extends beyond me to many other people in our circle; they are kind and smart and really deserve to know that all of their efforts to keep us afloat are seen and heard.

Megan Hamilton

Megan!!! I think you know how much your friendship has meant to me through these last few years of our degree, you have been one of the best friends I have made in my time here and your kindness and compassion have had as much of an impact on how great my time has been here as any of the lectures or critiques we've sat through together! I am also SO grateful for the ways you have chosen to dedicate your time and energy in this last school year to bringing together our community in such an inspiring way by helping to found the Pandemic Relief Zine group. You are a magic human!!

Phil Brovedani

Phil is so caring. He checks in on me often to make sure Im doing okay. He is a genuine, kind and thoughtful person. I am so grateful I got to know him better last year, I cant wait to be forever friends. Much love to you.

Phil has always worked really hard to keep people together and make an effort to include people; in 2020, when things have been lonely, I've found this really important. He cares, and makes sure we know, whether it's through delivering little baked goods to people or just checking in to make sure we're OK. I think these little gestures go a long way, and if nothing else, I deeply appreciate the warmth and kindness he has shown to everyone in this troubling year.

Portia Scabar

I am so thankful to have gotten to still work with you this year despite us all being off-campus. I can not wait to get to work with you even more as we sit on EC together this next year, I just know that your level headed yet fiery passion for the betterment of our experience as students is going to SHINE in your new role and that all of the hard work you have accomplished this year will lead to amazing things for you and our team in the coming years.

Rickee-Lee Webster

I am amazed at how Rickee-Lee can balance being a student and Boss-President of the AUArts-SA. She has been able to accomplish so much within a very limited time-frame. She deserves so much recognition for how hard she works, and how well she unifies the AUArts-SA. I wish the whole student body could see her hard work first hand.

Thank you for being such an amazing advocate Rickee-Lee <3 Thank you for all the amazing hard work and dedication to helping your fellow students!

I could not be more grateful for your presence in my life or for the fire that lives in your belly! You lead this team with such graceful strength and you inspire me to always keep pushing no matter how much we are pushed back against! Sending all of my love and gratitude to you and the hard work you do!

Rickee-Lee's kindness and enthusiasm is so inspiring, and the SA is so lucky to have her as President!

Rickee-Lee, a fiery light and caring leader. Thank you for bringing your warmth and passion to our team.

Thank you again for all of your hard work.

Shayla Stokes

Shayla is an INCREDIBLE person!!! If there is one person I can say that always goes above and beyond when there's an issue it's her. She makes this world just a little bit less lonely and a lot more hopeful. She has always been my choice for passing things down to -- this year's design discord being one of them. I look forward to seeing what she does in the future.

You are such an amazing artist, and person!

Skye Kacsmar-Mayoh

Skye is one of the kindest people I will have the pleasure of knowing. She always looks out for others and has a warm personality. If she has the opportunity to do something to brighten someone’s day she will take it. Thank you for being you.

Thea Thomas

I am so grateful to have gotten the opportunity to meet and work with you this year on the Indigenous Movie night community hub event. Thank you so much for wanting to share your time and energy with our community, it is so appreciated!

Wayan Garethsdottir Williams

Thank you again for your time and dedication in running the buttoneers and in cohosting your club's incredible winter button exchange back in December. I am so grateful our university was able to experience your corner of our community thanks to your hard work and I love my new pack of buttons!

She single handedly pressed and mailed all the buttons for the Winternational Button Exchange. She keeps the Buttoneers on track and comes up with fun ways to keep people connected. She’s always friendly, helpful and open and ready to solve problems, whatever comes her way.

For being a great friend, and all the work you've done for the Buttoneers, thank you.💗

Faculty

Talk about a tough year. Our faculty have been willing to adapt, adapt, adapt and ensure our students are advancing in their studies. Thank you for your dedication to our students.

Dr. Allison Mader

I have avoided taking English classes for the last two years mainly out of disinterest around learning material that may or may not be relevant to my degree and I am so grateful I did and consequently was presented with the opportunity to be in your classroom in both semesters this year. Your compassion, kindness, and willingness to share your knowledge with us have made a world of difference in my online learning experience, and I am so thankful for my time in your (virtual) classrooms! Thank you x 100 for every extension, your thoughtful feedback, and for making my pandemic learning a lot more bearable through your engaging reading selections!

Karl Geist

Thank you for being such an important part of my education.

Kevin Kurytnik

Thank you for being so dedicated, and such an important part of my education!

Kurtis Lesick

Kurtis - thank you so much for the time, care, and energy you have put into making us Media Arts students the artists we are today. I have been so grateful to have found myself at the last meeting spot of the day in every class this semester, because it has allowed me to see how excited you are, and how much you care about us and our careers. I know we don't always see eye to eye (this is Levin, as you've probably guessed), but I truly have appreciated how much I've learned from your inquisitive comments during critique, and how deep you dive into your students' work. At the risk of this getting too cheesy, I would also like to thank you for all the Drag Race gifs, and the "crit crew" references. I can only hope that as our class "sashay's away," that the next madt students will learn as much from you as we did. Thank you again and again.

Lynne Rennie

The support that Lynne offers us students is incredible and the VCD program is so lucky to have her!

Mark Clintberg

I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from you this year, not only in your classroom but also on the Board of Governors! I am always so inspired by your compassionate yet firm support for all in the university, and the lessons you have shared in the classroom have impacted my art and the ways I navigate my life in so many ways. Thank you so much for all of the ways you dedicate yourself to the betterment of our institution, we are all so grateful for you and the ways you choose to share your knowledge with us!

Mark is a phenomenal professor on so many levels. He is so kind, considerate and generous with his time.
How he adapted the structure of his classes to online learning in a way that was just as engaging as the classroom setting has been remarkable. He made AHIS classes a favourite. I am so grateful that I got the opportunity to learn from him. Thank you Mark! <3

Thank you so much Mark, for your engagement this year (and every year) with student artwork and art history, and for your dedication to creating supportive and safer learning environments. The classes you've taught throughout my time at this school have been so influential to not only my artistic practice, but also the ways I seek community, and the ways in which I advocate for myself and others. With moving online this year, I am so grateful for the amount of compassion and understanding you've shown myself and other students when it comes to navigating this weird online microsoft teams space. I would also like to thank you for creating such a great space in our FINA class last fall alongside Sondra. It was such a great opportunity to talk about my studio practise with both of you. I still find myself listening to that spotify playlist we made as a class at the end of term!

Mike Kerr

Thank you for being such a great professor!

Mike's classes have been a genuine highlight to my week and might actually be my best class experience of all time (online or not!). I'm seriously grateful for how much he has gone above and beyond for us students online this year!

Paul Hudson

Thank you for all of your work and research about the Fall Wellness Break. We sure appreciate the presentation and consultation that happened with the students and faculty.

Thank you for being an inspiration, and for making such an impact on my education.

Rita McKeough

Rita - I feel so honoured to have been in another studio class with you this year. The dedication and excitement with which you approach mine and others' work inspires me. I am so grateful for your messages of support throughout this semester, and for encouraging us to make work that we believe in, and that we are proud of. School hasn't been easy, especially online, but the energy you bring to our class can be felt so powerfully (even through this weird microsoft teams computer screen space). I am in awe of the care you put into learning about our artistic and research interests, and for the ways in which you mold our classroom to best support all of us. Despite this challenging semester, every Tuesday I feel so excited to meet with our Media Arts (*high kick!*) crew. It has been an honour to be taught by an artist as compassionate and understanding as you.

Silas Kaufman

Thank you for being such a great professor, you made such an impact on me!

He kept the morale up during the beginning of the fall semester when everyone was just learning the online format, and was nervous about the state of the world, by giving us mini boxing lessons at the end of every class! We really appreciated those little things!

Sondra Meszaros

Thank you Sondra for giving space and allowing room for dialogue and connections to be made within your classes. Some of my strongest relationships throughout AUArts has been made within your classroom. The effort you make to establish an open space has really made it easy to open up and be vulnerable on a scale that doesn't often happen elsewhere. My experience at AUArts would not have had such an impact on myself or my practice if you weren't here. Thank you for some of the best classes I've had during my undergrad <3

Thank you again and again Sondra, for your fierce support and interest in student work. I have felt so encouraged and supported artistically in all of my classes you've taught throughout the years. Moving online has not been easy (I guess I should only speak for myself, but I imagine it hasn't been easy for you either), but I am so grateful for the compassion and understanding you've shown students, both in the excitement you've shown for my work and research, and the openness and honesty in which you share with all of us. I would also like to specifically thank you for creating such a great space in our FINA class last fall alongside Mark. What a dream class!

Tivadar Bote

Thank you for being an important role in my education!

Troy Patenaude

Troy is a fabulous instructor, mentor, and person as a whole! He has taught me a world of new concepts, ideas, ways of thinking and ways of being that I had previously not encountered. He is amazing at what he does; always bringing joy, passion, and truth into all of his interactions. He is a light and a positive energy, and has made this pandemic-style academic world one worth looking forward to!

Tyler Rock

How many awards can I nominate him for? Tyler deserves so much more than a little piece of paper (or in this case an email) to thank him for the care and attention that he puts into the student’s experience. Whenever I have approached him with a problem whether it be school related or otherwise he always works miracles to find a solution or give advice. He is the spirit that keeps the glass department alive, and I can’t express how honoured I am to have the chance to be one of his students.

Staff + Admin

Donors, Sponsors and Supporters

Especially during this year, we are most thankful for all our donors, sponsors and supporters. You help us with student scholarships, bursaries, programs and even equipment. You have continued your support, and we have new endowments, more scholarships and bursaries, and new and continued programs. You even helped us raise more money than our goal for Boost-A-Student. You make a tremendous difference for our students and we are most grateful. Thank you.

Adele Schatschneider

Alex Moon

Alex Moon! Us media arts students are so grateful for the care and energy you put into the work that you do here. Going online has been such a weird and isolating experience, but I have been so grateful to have been able to come into the school and bump into you! (not literally of course, we were six-feet apart) The knowledge and experience you bring to the school is so incredible, and on top of that you are such a great person to know. Thank you endlessly.

Joel Farris

We had so much strong programming this year, in part thanks to your orchestration of the SA's programming and collaboration with program leads to achieve their visions.

Julianne Larson

She's been working hard, showing her commitment to making our organization a better place! All with a smile.

Kim Neutens

Kim is doing soooo much to advance student services. All with a smile.

Lisa Cerny

Lisa, thank you for keeping the fires burning, for keeping the schedule up to date, all students in the loop and for the advice and walk through when feeling of trouble or unknowing come up. We are sooo lucky to have you.

Throughout the duration of this last year and through all of the complications that covid threw at us Lisa went above and beyond to make sure that the Glass Department stayed on its feet. She put in so much work in the fall semester to facilitate students and their projects. Whether it was putting molds in the kilns or navigating the many layers of deep fuse projects she always made sure that she put the time into each project which as a student made me feel like she truly cared about each and every glass student. This semester is no different, Lisa has put in so much time to make sure that the hotshop schedules are accurate, and she has done many amazing things to get us to a point where we can actually be in the hotshop! Lisa cares so much about all of us and she is always willing to help everyone! I am very proud to be part of the glass department and I am so glad that we have a tech that is so smart and kind and helpful! Lisa deserves a whole lot of snaps for all of the wonderful things that she has done this year and for her eagerness to help everyone!

Everyone loves Marion Garden! She's worked hard for all of us at AUArts, all with a smile.

Mike has gone above and beyond as the SA Office Coordinator this year and their kindness shines through everything they do!

Peter Redecopp

Peter! Thank you for being such a great technician. Us media arts students are so grateful for your support all the time, but especially during this weird online school year. Thank you for every powerpoint, agenda, conversation, drink, giggle, and cry.

WOW! I have never in my life enjoyed working alongside someone as I do your caring, compassionate, incredible self!
