Inter(connected) Reception

Inter(connected) is an exhibition of work by the 2022-2023 hear/d residency artist cohort; Ella Crompton, Brendan Djentle Hamilton, Liz Kim, AJ Kluck, Sydney Paquette, Sid Serafin, Jiaqi Shi, Juli Song, Sasha Terway, and Christina Yao.

Each of these artists were prompted to explore themes of mental health and resiliency, in ways that resonated with them. Artists met weekly, throughout the school year, in meetings facilitated by peer-mentors Elise Lavallee Findlay and Levin Ifko. Through discussions, as well as our own musings and experiences, we created Inter(connected), an exhibition that explores each artists’ relationships to vulnerability, growth, tension, and in-betweenness, in ways that are so much more than linear.

Hear/d Residency: Call for Applicants

Submissions for the upcoming hear/d residency are now open for all AUArts students of any year or major!

Apply through our online form. Deadline to apply is September 26th.

The Dates:

This year’s residency will run from early October 2022 - early April 2023.

About the Residency:

The hear/d residency is a six-month artist residency that asks students to create work centered around the theme of healing and recovery as it relates to mental health. We invite participants to collaborate on researching, developing, creating, and curating an exhibition that allows our community to safely explore these themes, while offering hands-on experiences that directly relate to the fields of art, craft, creative research, and design.

We foster self-advocacy and resilience-building while developing a visual language that de-stigmatizes mental health conversations.

The Perks:

This is a great opportunity to see what it’s like to be a part of a collaborative exhibition that creates real impact in our community. We pride ourselves in facilitating communities of care where supportive relationships translate beyond of the residency.

The hear/d residency will culminate in an exhibition on campus where the participating students will have the opportunity to network and share their work with the larger public.

Alongside workshops, mentorship and curatorial feedback, we provide students a chance to explore possible career paths while enhancing their resume and CV. Each participant is provided with an honorarium to support the time, resources, and materials required to participate in the program.

In addition, hear/d residency participants have the opportunity to participate in an annual collaboration with Exposure Festival that offers access to international audiences.

Hear/d Residency Presents: Subject to Change

Building a path to resilience involves accepting the flux of life, the impermanence of being. As we become more attuned to our ever-changing mental states, we start to notice what nurtures us and what drain us. "Subject to Change" explores the power of giving self-permission to evolve, to do and undo with self-compassion.

Join us as we celebrate the work of our 2022 Hear/d residents: Megan Hamilton, Lu Bassett, Rachel Denbina, Vivian Smith, Rachel MacKinnon, GK Villanueva, Melody Poon, Quynn Covey, Brooklyn Payne, and Vian Esterhuizen.

April 1st - 14th in the AUArts lower main mall.

Call for Submissions: Rewinding the Tape exhibition

via https://www.marionnicollgallery.ca/submissions

Rewinding the Tape shows the courageous journey of artists exploring their mental health through their art. After all, rewinding the tape is the first step to moving forward. Rewinding the Tape explores the process of fragmenting and studying one's story to make sense of it. Breaking patterns, stereotypes and self-destructive behaviours requires the courage to explore one's looped narrative. It requires finding where we got stuck in our narrative and starting the painful process of untangling the threads of our stories to make sense of them and to start the healing process.

Applications close December 6th, 2021

Hear/d Residency Submissions Open

The Hear/d Residency invites students from all disciplines to work together to collaborate on the research, development, creation and curation of an exhibition. The residency will have its own central theme of resilience, relating to the journey of mental health issues currently experienced by many post-secondary students.

Given this theme, participants are invited to explore and share their journeys in a creative and innovative way. Through group discussions, reflection, individual studio time, critiques, and workshops, this residency will provide a platform for a diversity of creative activity.

The residency will aim to raise awareness towards the health + well-being of post-secondary students, while also connecting members from different disciples who will help to build a stronger sense of inclusion and solidarity in the AUArts community.

To apply, and for more information visit https://www.auarts-sa.ca/heard-residency
