Hanh Nguyen is an interdisciplinary artist from Vietnam based in Mohkinstsis/Calgary who works and explores the existential meaning of being. By combining logic and fantasy, practicalness and dreaminess, she hopes to understand her relationship to the world and the connection between culture and time, particularly her Vietnamese roots.

The Living Room addresses where the boundaries of faith and brutality intersect. This exhibition confronts uncomfortable truths surrounding domestic violence within the sanctity of religious homes. Within the confines of the domestic space lies a paradoxical realm where the sacred and the profane collide. Here, the tranquility of home becomes a veil for abusive structures backed by teachings of christian churches. Bartsch sheds light on this dichotomy, displaying the complexities of gender dynamics, power, and abuse that pervade these environments. Bartsch translates these themes through a graphic transformation of the domestic space, taking common household objects and perverting them into masses of flesh and viscera to communicate suffering and loss. Through their practice, Bartsch advocates for the de-sanitization of trauma and emphasizes the weight of suffering.

Elevating the Paper Object

Through the medium of an 8 ½” x 11” sheet of handmade paper, art students, university faculty, and staff at the institution were confronted with the result of one artist’s process and challenged to enact a manipulation upon it. Conventional labour and material relationships were encouraged to be upended, resulting in a myriad of approaches to the understanding of the paper object. The work as a whole embraces fluidity, not only in terms of the physical material as it traversed manipulation through the hands of various possessors, but also in relation to its contextualisation. The resulting objects transcend the threshold of a material of potential -that is utilitarian and ambiguous- to one of fixed function and purpose as an art object: this further assisted by the positioning of the object within the exhibition space. -Jonathan Creese

Quilting is a versatile craft that is historically rooted in self-expression, protest, and memorialization. Traditionally, quilting is thought to be a feminine practice and has been made in the home. Quilting requires relatively inexpensive materials and no formal training which keeps the practice accessible to community members and individuals of all backgrounds. Because of these traits, quilts are an ideal vehicle to support our individual messages of feminism and chronic illness advocacy. We often say that our quilts are “made with rage”. This supports both of our concepts because we believe that anger is a catalyst for advocacy and change.

Tokens are hidden around the AUArts campus. If you find a token, bring it to the Students' Association Office (room 335 in the Main Mall) Monday-Thursday 11-4pm and exchange the token for a wellness-based book of your choosing courtesy of Recovery on Campus.

The Students' Association Community Micro-Grants program offers funding and support to clubs, student-run galleries, and projects on campus. This program aims to foster collaboration, facilitate skill and knowledge sharing, promote professional development, provide opportunities for low-stakes entry-level arts administration and project development, combat social isolation, and create a strong creative community.

This is what I hear

This is what I hear is an installation piece that investigates the sharing of lived experience as political knowledge that is owned and expressed by people who experience it (1). Throughout the exhibition are fabric strips that are racist comments made to the artist in her lifetime. The show aims to give these internalized experiences a physical form, the fabric strips become evidence, no longer can they be refuted and dismissed. The doll, in place of the artist, challenges these statements, returning the gaze of the fabric strips and facing away from the dismissive ones with an unsettling defiant stare.

Scoring the MNG

Scoring the MNG is a durational performance where a musical score is composed on a piano inside of the Marion Nicoll Gallery (MNG) as an exploration of translation and interpretation. The characteristics and architecture of the MNG guide the composition process, and the score is written directly onto the walls of the MNG throughout the duration of the exhibition. Compositional parameters are extracted from observations made in and around the gallery related to the language of music. For example: the MNG’s cubic/square shape might be represented through use of quartal harmony, four-note chords, shell chords (to create a sense of containment/spatiality), and avoiding the antithetical circle of fifths. The work becomes an ongoing process of attempting to translate one non-verbal language (architecture) into another (music) to underscore a relationship between the two.MNG Main Space
