  • Call for Hear/d Residency Submissions
    All day
    October 1, 2018-October 1, 2018

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS MONDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2018 AT MIDNIGHT

ACAD Students’ Association is seeking applications for the Fall 2018 Hear/d Residency program. Part of the ACADSA mandate is to provide professional development opportunities for students while also helping to facilitate the development of a strong student artist community + culture. The ACADSA Hear/d Residency invites individuals and collectives from all discipline areas at the Alberta College of Art + Design to work together to collaborate on the research, development, creation and curation of an exhibition.

The residency will have its own central theme of resilience, relating to the journey of mental health issues currently experienced by many post-secondary students. Given this theme, participants are invited to explore and share their journeys in a creative and innovative way. Through group discussions, reflection, individual studio time, critiques, and workshops, this residency will provide a platform for a diversity of creative activity. The residency will aim to raise awareness towards the health + well-being of post-secondary students, while also connecting members from different disciples who will help to build a stronger sense of inclusion and comradery in the ACAD community.

    RESILIENCE

Being in good health means more than feeling physically well; it also means feeling mentally well. Today, we are more aware of how our mental and physical health affect each other. Setting aside time to focus on mental health is important – to you and those who care about you. Life is full of change, risks and challenges. Good mental or emotional health helps us find our balance and stay in control, even during turbulent times. – Canadian Mental Health Association (2017)

    SUBMISSION PROCEDURE

The application process is entirely electronic. Direct email and paper submissions will NOT be accepted. Due to the number of submissions received, the quantity of support material in the application is restricted. The jury will not review additional materials beyond the required documents. All documentation must be submitted through the online submission form:

The following materials should be included in your application:

    1. Statement of interest:
      • Discuss how the theme of this program relates to your current artistic practice and the broader context of your work, research, and interests.
      • Outline your interest in the program and understanding of the importance of mental health support.
    2. Curriculum Vitae: Describe your creative background to a maximum length of two pages. Please include all relevant contact information and a personal website, if applicable.
    3. Support: Please submit up to ten pieces of additional support material, including digital images, videos, or audio clips with a corresponding numbered image list. Our programming committee will review up to a maximum of five minutes of time-based work.

    Artist’s Statement & Bio:

“Water (Flåm)”, was created while Neufeld was studying at the University of Bergen in Norway. During the rainy winter, she visited the small village at the end of the Aurlandsfjord, Flåm. Neufeld was captivated by the surrounding natural beauty and incredible patterns being formed in the ocean’s water. Using a photographic background with abstracted forms representing rain and wind, created in bold stylized colours. Each binding was designed specifically for each colour of the weaving. The weaving is made out of Norwegian wool, made at the Innvik A/S Factory in Innvik, Norway.

Hannah Neufeld is a textile artist and designer based in Calgary, Alberta. Her work references familiar places and ideas interpreted through line, shape and colour. She is currently in her final year studying at the Alberta College of Art + Design.

    Ryan Danny Owen – NOCTURNE!

    Exhibition Runs: October 22 – November 2, 2018

Main Mall at the Alberta College of Art + Design

Join us Thursday, October 25th in the ACAD Main Mall for the opening reception from 6 – 8 pm!

    Artist’s Statement & Bio:

NOCTURNE! is an exploration of cruising as well as an intimate portrait of the absent queer body. Using wood, found pornographic material, and abstraction as an invitation to encounter. Soaked within a kind of pitch black, those men exploring the dark with a desire to encounter another, the duality of pleasure and panic; sex and death; the bodies of men at the edge of disappearing. A looming intimidating form there is nervousness in approaching but a desire to encounter. Arouse and beware.

Ryan Danny Owen is an artist and writer based in Calgary, Alberta. His work responds to questions of queer identity, loss, desire, and emotion. Through the use of various media, including music, found photographs, sculpture, and pornography, Owen examines his body existing within the context of queer genealogy and challenges the idea of coming after.
